Maintenance of Household Tiles and Grout

Tiling your floor is a classic means of decoration. Perhaps it’s because it requires a good eye for taste to choose the right combination of tiles that would suit one’s home the best. Not only do you need to find tiles that match, but you would also have to choose the color of the grout in between. We can’t have the living room tiles look like the bathroom floor, after all.

When your tiles have been set up, however, you need to face the tedious task of cleaning it. It may be done with some basic cleaning techniques; scrubbing shouldn’t be too hard if it is done regularly. You only have to be careful if your grout has been colored, for some of them can fade when scrubbed vigorously.

However, problems will begin to arise once you decide to hold out on your maintenance duties for a time. This trouble comes from the porous material with which grout is made out of. Similar to unworked cement, it will thus have holes that dust can penetrate, but scrubbing can’t reach. That is why (to those with uncolored grout especially) grout darkens in color with age. If you want to keep it looking new, you should thus clean frequently.

The porous nature of grout also causes an additional problem; colored liquids like wine, coffee, or even the occasional juice drink. You must of course avoid getting spills, but sometimes, it just cannot be stopped. In this case, just wipe it off immediately; do not let it settle in deep.

If you find yourself with grout that has been stained with accidental spills, or if it just has not been cleaned as often as you want to, then you may want to consider hiring professional grout cleaners. They can pass over both the tiles and the grout with ease, leaving them as clean as it had been on the day you had them installed.
